MEDIA ADVISORY

2019 GREAT CALIFORNIA SHAKEOUT SOCAL PRIMARY MEDIA EVENT AND FULL-SCALE EXERCISE TO BE HELD AT BIOLA UNIVERSITY IN LA MIRADA ON THU., OCT. 17

WHAT: Earthquake Country Alliance, organizer of the International ShakeOut Day, will be hosting the annual Southern California Primary Media Day Event and Full-Scale Exercise at Biola University in the City of La Mirada (3:30 a.m.-2 p.m.).

WHO: The 2019 Great California ShakeOut Southern California Primary Media Event and Full-Scale Exercise will include the following activities:

(3:30 a.m.-1 p.m.) Media opportunities with the new Ready America’s “Big Shaker” earthquake simulator and demonstrations of the “Seven Steps to Earthquake Preparedness and Safety”, Subject Matter Experts and student victim moulage will be available.

(9:30-10:05 a.m.) Press conference with invited guest speakers: County of Los Angeles Supervisor Janet Hahn, 32nd District California State Senator Bob Archuleta, City of La Mirada Mayor Steve De Ruse, U.S. Geological Survey Dr. Ken Hudnut, California Governor Office of Emergency Services Ryan Arba, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Daryl L. Osby, California Earthquake Authority Chief Communications Officer Chris Nance and Biola University Vice President of Enrollment, Marketing & Communications Lee Wilhite Associate Vice President of Campus Safety John Ojeisekhoba.

(10:17-18 a.m.) A simulated 7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes on the Northern portion of the Elsinore Fault and will rupture the Whittier Fault resulting in intensity Level VIII severe shaking on the Biola University campus. Biola University will trigger ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning over their campus wide public address system. Drop, Cover, Hold-On and/or Lock, Cover, Hold On drill with students, faculty and invited guests will take place.

(10:19 a.m.-12 noon) Full-Scale Exercise featuring Biola University Emergency Management Team, Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) from Biola University, cities of La Mirada and Norwalk; Search & Rescue and Triage operations conducted by the Los Angeles County Fire Department; canteen support operations from American Red Cross, assistance from Disaster Management Area E, HAM radio operators, Southern California Resource Services for Independent Living, You Can Be the Hero Foundation and Los Angeles County Chief Executive Office, Office of Emergency Management and Sheriff’s Department.

NOTES: Media are required to RSVP for the Ready America “Big Shaker” earthquake simulator in advance to Leo Fumia (760) 644-5239 or leo@readyamerica.com. Also, a sign language interpreter will be available for the press conference as well as other language interpreters on site.

Media trucks parking is located next to and around Rose Hall on the Biola University campus; entrance is located off of Biola Ave. at Lot 8; and other media vehicles may park in Lot B (Map attached).
