Full Description:
The Redwood Coast Tsunami Working Group (RCTWG), along with the residents of Fields Landing, will be conducting a Community Wide Tsunami Evacuation DRILL. Please note that this is just a DRILL. In the event of a real Earthquake or Tsunami, this DRILL will be cancelled.

Note: This DRILL is designed for a locally generated tsunami where an earthquake, lasting a long time may generate a tsunami which could arrive in as little as 10 minutes.

The RCTWG is working with its partners and the community of Fields Landing to conduct a tsunami evacuation DRILL on Saturday, October 12, 2019. Residents and visitors of Fields Landing will be able to practice evacuating in the event a large, locally generated tsunami is headed for our coastline. For this DRILL, the Fields Landing Tsunami Siren will be sounded at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12th. For this DRILL, when residents and visitors hear the siren they should follow established evacuation routes to a designated tsunami DRILL evacuation site.

The primary goal of this DRILL is to ensure that community members and visitors of Fields Landing know how to evacuate quickly and safely in the event of a large earthquake and locally induced tsunami. Past DRILLS, in other communities, have demonstrated that people react better during real tsunamis when they have practiced evacuating. People who participate in DRILLS consistently report that experience reduces anxiety.

The siren being used for the Fields Landing Evacuation DRILL has a range that can vary significantly depending on a number of conditions. Depending on weather and wind conditions, people could possibly hear the siren if they are within a radius of five miles. This may include: King Salmon; Ridgewood, parts of Pine Hill, Cutten and Eureka; Fairhaven; the South Jetty; Humboldt Hill; College of the Redwoods; and portions of Loleta.

An informational Town Hall meeting will be held on Sunday October 6th at 6 p.m. at the Humboldt Grange, 5845 Humboldt Hill Road, Eureka. Anyone wishing to know more about earthquakes and tsunamis on the north coast are welcome to attend. The Humboldt Grange will be hosting a Spaghetti Dinner at 5 p.m. for anyone interested.
