Brown Bag Lunch Online Presentation with Lori Dengler, Director, Humboldt Earthquake Education Center, Cal Poly Humboldt: On December 5, 2024, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck offshore of Cape Mendocino. This is the largest earthquake to impact the North Coast since the 1992 M7.2 Cape Mendocino earthquake. Five minutes after the earthquake, the National Tsunami Warning Center put all areas of the coastline from near Santa Cruz on the central California coast to central Oregon, including all of the San Francisco Bay. This talk is an overview of the tectonic setting, damage and impacts, why the tsunami warning was issued, and how it may change they way tsunami warnings are issued and communicated.
